4 Styled Outfits for your Holiday Photos

During a recent Instagram poll, many of you answered YES to wanting to see outfit ideas for your holiday photos. A huge part of my reason for starting a blog was to share or suggest style advice, so creating these holiday outfit mock-ups was right up my alley! In an effort to capture a variety of families I opted to suggest four different styled looks which range from conservative semi-formal to casual. While these exact styles may not align with each family members taste you can pull inspiration for the color combinations and silhouettes to find something that suits your personal style. Below are a few additional tips for styling outfits that pair well with one another.

TIPS FOR STYLing FAMILY PHOTOS

STAY TRUE TO YOUR VIBE: Nothing reads more awkward on camera than when you’re not comfortable in something that they are wearing. While fidgeting kiddos are another story, staying within your comfort zone in terms of fit or silhouette will help you feel your best. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing denim or even PJs in a family holiday card! In fact, some of the cutest holiday photos I’ve seen are the ones that are styled off-the-cuff or in casual wear.

YOU DON’T NEED TO MATCH: I’m sure you’ve seen the family all in white t-shirts and jeans staggered in front of a blurred outdoor scene. This may even have been something your own family partook in the nineties! There really isn’t a need for your family to all be dressed in the same exact thing. You can let your own personalities come through in different clothing and colors while still looking coordinated. So, next time your 5-year-old begs you to wear the sparkly boots with the dress - let her shine ;)

AVOID STRIPES OR SMALL PRINTS: A general rule to follow is to avoid small prints and stripes, while they look great in person they don’t register on camera. It’s actually a rule that most on-air personalities follow as well. Stripes actually create a weird optical effect on the camera called a moire pattern.

COORDINATE WITH YOUR SETTING: Your setting or background should coincide with the style of your outfits. While formal attire can be worn when pictured in a field of grain, be sure to wear colors that will pop off your background rather than blend in! I can’t tell you how many white outfits on snow photos lose their luster because the subjects disappear into the setting.
