Outdoor Patio Reveal
It’s patio reveal day! After what felt like weeks of keeping this transformation a secret it’s finally time to share the details of our outdoor patio! As many of you know this project is part of our larger backyard transformation that we started early this spring. We went back and forth on many of the details including whether or not to keep our other outdoor furniture or swap it our for something fresh, which in the end we did! I’m so thrilled with how everything came together and can’t wait to continue to make small additions to the space as the summer progresses. Keep reading to see more views of this black and white outdoor patio, including sources for products and information on our styling choices.
Black & White Outdoor Patio Design
Our original plan for the space was to paint the prior red deck black. We wanted a substantial change and originally thought the white would end up looking too bright and wouldn’t be a good flow with the space. I’m SO glad that we changed our minds at the last minute! The white makes a huge change and ended up looking like it was there all along. I documented our painting process on Instagram, you can view the highlight reel here. The process of prepping, priming, and painting our deck white was pretty seamless. The condition of the deck was good when we started which made it significantly easier to prep.
We used Rust-Oleum RockSolid Tintable Resurfacer 6x and the Rust-Oleum Deck Primer to complete this project. The reviews on the product were a bit harsh IMO and we didn’t come across any issues with the application. I will say that we also purchased the application brush that’s recommended to be used to apply the paint and ended up switching them out. We ended up needing 3-gallons to get the job done and did 2-coats of paint (plus the primer) for a cohesive all-white look.
Our next step on this deck will be painting the french doors leading from our living room black - more of that to come in another post!

Patio Styling and Furniture Selections
Once the deck was painted, it was full steam ahead to selecting our outdoor furniture and accessories. One of the issues I originally came across when designing the patio was how to successfully divide the space so we could utilize the full size and have designated areas for eating and relaxing. Ruggable outdoor rugs were the perfect solution to creating these zones and making them feel more purposeful. The Outdoor Offset Stripe Black Rug felt like it was made for this outdoor deck and added the perfect base to building these conversation spaces. We often find ourselves barefoot outdoors, and having a cushioned rug underfoot is a HUGE benefit. Ruggable outdoor rugs are stain, mold, fade-resistant, and machine washable, making them perfect for any outdoor entertaining space.
For the dining area, we wanted the table that my dad built us to be center-focused. We found these chairs on major sale at the Serena & Lily Outlet, and they are truly the perfect addition to this space. Before, we had benches flanking either side that frankly just weren’t very comfortable. Having the option to seat six around the table comfortably is a huge plus for us! We hung bistro lights around the perimeter of our overhang and hope to sting them vertically with the tree soon! Other additions such as the hanging Boston Fern and hook and eye game add a bit of character and fun.
The longe and conversation area was the largest addition to our deck and truly brought to life the style we were going for. A classic wood frame and white cushions with black piping are modern without being too formal. This 4-piece outdoor set from Joss & Main is great for lounging in the cooler mornings with a cup of coffee or hosting friends for a cocktail at happy hour. The bench cushion was a DIY and one that I’m thrilled with!
I’m not overly savvy when it comes to DIY’s, but this one was super easy and ended up costing less than $60! I purchased outdoor fabric from HobbyLobby on sale and used a scrap piece of wood and leftover foam from my parents to complete the project. When not in use, we will store and cover it on the dining table.
Cheers,
Kelly
