DIY Christmas Tree Skirt

Earlier this week Birchbox reached out to its blogging community to share a favored DIY project. Since the countdown to the holiday season has already begun I wanted to share one of my favorite Christmas DIY.

What you will need:

  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • Scissors

  • Fabric for skirt {enough for 24 in. with a radius of 12 inches (mine was created with 1 1/2 yards of fabric which was plenty for a small skirt }

  • 1–2 yards grosgrain or satin ribbon {I used a stand of fur for my tie}

  • tape measure

**If your stumped on what size to make your tree skirt just remember that the skirt should be about the same diameter as the base of your tree.

Directions:

Using a tape measure, mark and cut a square of material that is approximately 2-1/2' x 2-1/2'. Fold the square into quarters, then over itself to form a triangle with the folded center at point. Cut base in a quarter circle. Cut a small quarter circle out of the point. Open the skirt until it's folded in half and cut along the radius on one side of the center hole only . This will provide a hole for the tree trunk and a slit in the fabric so the skirt can be placed under the tree.

Using scissors, cut linen fabric lengthwise into 2-inch-wide strips.

Preheat your hot glue gun. Apply a line of hot glue along outside edge of skirt warning, if your working with thin fabric remember  that the glue will be extremely hot!}. Create ruffles by pinching linen with fingers and pushing gathers down onto hot glue {almost like you would pinch the edge of a pie crust} This is the most tedious part of the project and will take a little time. Work in small sections, no more than about 12 inches at a time. Continue this process around the entire skirt edge  Start the next row approximately  inches above the previous row. Continue adding rows until entire canvas base is covered.

Since the skirt I created was just a half, I merely attached a strip of fur around the inside hole of the skirt. I thought it looked cute and did a great job of hiding the plastic tree base. If you are looking to do a full skirt continue on with the following directions:

Cut 10 pieces of grosgrain ribbon into approximately 12-inch lengths. Use hot glue to attach ribbon to underside of tree skirt along slit created in canvas base. Evenly space five on one side of slit and five directly opposite. Place skirt under tree and tie ribbons together in bows.
