Early Fall Wardrobe Capsule

As we’re nearly half-way through September the end of the summer season is well in sight. Not that it’s an indicator that the weather will be following suit anytime soon. With 100+ degree days shorts and t-shirt dresses have become the norm around here! Since there isn’t any sign that the weather will be letting up I’ll be turning to a few standard wardrobe basics to get me through the next month. The biggest suggestion I’d purpose when shopping during the next few months is to hold off on purchasing anything dedicated to winter apparel. (This is especially true if you live in a warmer state like California.)

My theory behind waiting to buy in-season clothing really just comes down to the fact that it will just sit..for months and may actually never get worn. Instead invest in piece you find yourself routinely wearing now and into fall. The whole point of a capsule collection is to minimize frivolous spending, and find pieces that can be worn or styled in multiple ways. For me, these pieces will do more than take me through the next few months, they’ll act as staples in my daily wardrobe, that I can mix-and-match with things I already own!

Layers

If living in San Francisco taught me anything about fashion its how to layer! It could be sunny and warm then cold and foggy within 45 minutes. Because of this layering is KEY! I’ll transition this type of thinking into my late summer capsule as well. Investing in silk or satin slip-dresses that can be styled solo, under a cardigan or paired with a light-weight sweater. The end result is versatility, you’ll wind up getting MUCH more wear out of pieces that can be mixed and matched.

Trends that Last

I love trying new trends, but I loathe the idea of certain styles only lasting for a season! Because of this I am very conscious with which trends I choose to invest in. If it’s something I’m dying to try out, or a print that has come to be readily available it’s typically a sign of a piece worth shelling out for. This season I have my eye on incorporating more color and print - of the animal variety! In terms of color I’m loving burnt orange, olive, warm cinnamon brown.

On the feet

Two things I tend to wear year-round are sneakers and ankle boots. Whether styled with dresses or denim-cut offs these footwear options are essential to my laid back style. This season I’m looking to add a bit of texture to my footwear, either in the form of calf hair or patent leather.

Puffed Up Sleeves

Typically I’m not a huge fan of puffy sleeves or shoulder pads, but when styled in coordination with a more streamlined look - it works! I’d personally style a neutral colored blouse with a pair of straight-leg jeans or a wrap skirt.
