We’ve all been there, you feel stuck, like you don’t have an outlet or place to truly unwind. It’s tough and many of us know this feeling all too well. I remember 5-6 years ago when I was just starting out on my own. I barely made enough to afford my own apartment let alone furnish it the way I wanted to. Even in a space all my own I still felt like it wasn’t the escape I needed (especially after interning and working for peanuts.) Now, several years later I still find myself getting stuck in ruts or mind-blocks. It’s times like these that I take a step back and go into my own personal escape.

I know what you’re probably thinking - personal escape? It’s less of an ideal and more of a place within my home that allows me to unwind or escape from a creative block. So much of working from home means I am constantly in the same environment so brain fog is REAL! Luckily, I’m now much more capable of seeing the signs of when its time to take a break. Aside from escaping my own nine-to-five, I also realize that everyone needs a place or designated area where they can break free of the daily grind.

Have a purpose

For me, my escape if from work, but yours could be from a variety of things (family, roommates, or even children - no judgment!) Because of this you may find that having certain things in this space are essential to helping to decompress. Listening to a podcast, enjoy a cup of tea, glass of wine, or even flipping through a magazine. As a new mom, I totally get that me-time is limited and very precious. Whatever your reason for scouting out this space, make sure to find a purpose for it.

Designate a space

So much of finding a space within your home that is suited to your needs depends on your living situation. This isn’t to say that you need to live in 2000 SQFT to create a place for, “me time”. It can be anywhere you feel comfortable - a patio, a spare room, or in my case my reading nook. It’s certainly not the biggest area in our home, but it’s quiet, filled with natural light and very comfortable. I also find that having an area to unwind helps me take my mind off of things and truly relax - which is the end goal for creating these spaces.

Free yourself of distractions

Obviously everyone has their own idea or terms on what is justified. Since social media is a large part of my job I personally prefer to be free of my phone or computer when unwinding. Generally, I’ll brew a cup of Green Tea with Ginger plus Probiotics or Lavender Chamomile Herbal Tea with Probiotics (afternoon choice!) pick up a book or just allow my mind to relax. Sometimes I’ll combine a few flavors of tea and create my own unique brew. I actually started drinking Bigelow Tea during my pregnancy and felt that it helped soothe my overall mood. Because of this I prefer to drink Bigelow over other tea brands.

Go for comfort

A big part of this space is the furniture we selected for tor this area. This chair is extremely comfortable and lends itself perfectly to extended lounging. Much of creating this environment is being able to relax within it. For that reason, I prefer to keep “decor” to a minimum. This isn’t to say that your space should be this way, but I find that I clean, minimal space lends itself to being a better place to de-stress. Occasionally, I’ll diffuse essential oils or light a candle to add an element of ambiance, which is an easy thing to do in any space!

If you had a designated one area in your home to unwind in where would it be?

Cheers,

Kelly
