Nursery Closet Reveal with Rubbermaid
This post was written in collaboration with Rubbermaid. All opinions expressed hereafter are 100% my own!
It’s finally here, our nursery closet reveal with Rubbermaid! To say that this has been one of the most exciting projects we’ve worked on to date would be an understatement. Evie’s nursery was a big project and one that took months to transform. (If you remember, the nursery used to be our home office, as seen here). I actually drew up my idea on a napkin while at dinner one night with Kevin. The room itself is on the smaller side and the closet was the first project that we tackled in the space. In order to utilize every inch of the awkward floor plan, we knew the closet had to do double-duty to organize clothes and also serve as a diaper changing station.
THE PROCESS
The overall layout was something we weren’t sure was doable at first, so I created a mock-up of my concept using Rubbermaid’s digital closet builder tool. The tool allows customers to drag and drop products to build their own custom closet using Rubbermaid products. This gave us a better visual of the closet and let us see if the design would work with the measurements of the space. Luckily, we only needed to make a few minor adjustments to our original plan to make it fit! Once we got a game plan for the layout we started to research furniture and closet systems that we could install ourselves. We wanted to have space for a dresser/changing table and hanging space and storage for clothing. Rubbermaid had various systems for us to choose from which allowed us to integrate our changing table set up. We ended up settling on the Rubbermaid 3–6 Ft. FastTrack Expandable Closet Kit. This gave us free rein to customize according to all our storage needs.
The Install
As with any DIY project, mapping out our steps was key to making the install go as smoothly as possible. I had originally anticipated that it would take days to hang the wallpaper, especially since I had never hung this traditional style. My dad stepped in to help me, and with two people only ended up taking a few hours. The one thing I will say about installing wallpaper is how important measurements are! I would suggest utilizing a T-Bar, ruler, and double-checking all measurements before applying the paper to the wall. Because the pattern was slightly ornate we opted to start the wallpaper in the middle of the wall and work on way out to either side. This ensured that the pattern aligned correctly and showed off the best view of the floral design.
After giving the walls a few days to adhere we trimmed the excess around the baseboards and moved on the adding the furniture. We opted to purchase an affordable dresser that was neutral enough to match the rooms aesthetic. The minimal design elements actually matched with our Jenny Lind style crib!
From here we used the Rubbermaid guide and watched their video tutorials to ensure we installed the wall brackets accordingly. Based on our original plans we decided on hanging and storage shelves to be to the right of the changing table for convenient access. Here we opted to have two hang rods and various shelves where we could add baskets as needed. We actually measured many of these baskets and clothing pieces ahead of time to figure out just how much vertical distance we needed to have between shelves. The great thing about theRubbermaid 3–6 Ft. FastTrack Expandable Closet Kit is how easily it can be rearranged. This will come in handy as Evie gets older and we need to adjust the hanging storage to accommodate larger garments.
DESIGN & STORAGE
The color palette of Evie’s room is a mix of pale pinks, greens, and rattan, which sounds odd, but actually works quite well together! The first design piece that we selected was the wallpaper, which can be seen here. Sadly, the print is sold-out, but you can find similar patterns linked in the shop section below. I was initially torn between two designs and so happy we settled on this floral and gold print. We hung an oversized bohemian-inspired mirror just above the changing table. The placement of the mirror reflects the outside light making the closet appear larger and brighter.
In keeping with the theme of the space, we purchased woven grass baskets to arrange throughout the closet system. The smaller baskets are great for holding accessories like socks, bibs, and of course diapers! The Rubbermaid 3–6 Ft. FastTrack Expandable Closet Kit is streamlined and doesn’t have any bulky pieces or oversized rods which really gave us a cohesive feel that allowed the closet to continue to look custom to the nursery.
Have you ever transformed a small space in your home? I’d love to hear about your make-overs and if what tips you have for creating additional storage!
