Winter Wedding Guest, Cocktail Attire

January is a time of year that seems to stump us all when it comes to shopping. It’s a month when retailers seem to be forgoing holiday apparel while simultaneously releasing spring/resort collections. This definitely puts a damper in shopping and makes looking for winter wedding cocktail attire even more tricky! And, while, I’ll be the first to admit that winter weddings are BEAUTIFUL; they definitely throw a wrench into styling something to wear as an attendee.

The first thing to note when shopping for an ensemble for a winter wedding is to know that both a jacket and dress/jumpsuit will be needed! This is especially true if the ceremony or reception is being hosted outdoors. You’ll want to ensure whatever you pick up pairs well with a nice coat or jacket, i.e. don’t leave this till the last minute. When winter cocktail attire is requested, I normally tend to side on the darker side of the color palette. I also, make a point to avoid any specific wedding colors. Let’s be honest there’s nothing more awkward than realizing the dress you chose puts you in the bridesmaid line-up.

Opt for a short-midi length range and embrace long or cap sleeves if possible! This will allow you to ditch a heavier coat for a pashmina if the weather cooperates. As a general rule, stay away from “summery” styles like smocked tops or tassel-tie sleeves. Obviously, these don’t apply to destination weddings where the climate is warmer! You definitely don’t need to avoid prints!

Subtle florals are a great way to bring in color without sticking to a solid hue. As always accessorizing is a great way to dress up something you may already own. Play with an array of dainty jewelry (see how to stack here) or invest in a pair of statement earrings!
