Dreaming up your ideal living space can mean different things to different people. However, I think all of us can agree that we’d like to want to spend time in the space we design. After all, living rooms are made for living! I’ve shared our take on family-friendly spaces (here). One requirement that both Kevin and I wholeheartedly agreed upon was that the furnishing needed to be family-friendly and comfortable!

We’re a small but mighty family of three, and much if not all of our lounging is done in this space. So having furnishings that we can relax, play, and entertain with is key. Most of this room was pieced together since we moved in nearly a year ago. We search high and low for the perfect fit for many of the larger pieces, including this couch from Castlery and our rattan media cabinet from Pottery Barn.

So much for styling, a home is a process, and we truly took our time in this room! Keep reading for exact sources and styling tips, and similar furnishings and decor from Joss & Main!

California Casual Living Room

When I think of the design style, “California Casual,” I immediately think back to California resort living. Not so much high-end hotels. More so thoughtful design touches that can be seen in boutique hotels along the California Coast. Furnishings that utilize natural shades and materials, touches of dark metal tones, and a styling process that isn’t overly stuffy. While there is an element of minimalism in many of my design inspirations, this space has many more nods to family life.

Take, for instance, the images of family and vacation photos on the wall. Or the use of rattan storage baskets for warm blankets and our daughter’s toys. However you interpret the design style, there is a common thread that we have chosen to connect many of the spaces within our home.

One of my favorite new nooks in this room is our front entryway. Our home is small and was reconfigured from its 1960s layout, leaving a small alcove by the front door. We love the glass in this door, and rather than swap it out decided to give it a modern edge with black paint. A simple yet, understated woven jute entry rug continues the flow into our home, while a rattan pouf tucks nicely out of the walkway and doubles as extra seating. These decorative touches from Joss & Main add the perfect amount of character without appearing overly cluttered.

Since our color palette is neutral, we have tried to bring in natural color tones that pick up tones from the rug - deep grey-blue, rust, and creamy taupe color. In addition, we occasionally will display artwork on TV to prevent the “black hole” effect, which is also a nice change of pace! We plan to add a wood frame around the TV to complete this room transformation.
