Our California Casual living room “make-over” has been one that we’ve been working on for a while. We’ve been very thoughtful about the pieces we’ve selected for this space. Some furniture we’re things we had from our prior home, others were purchased, and a few were purchased second-hand! The best thing about achieving a cohesive look is finding decor that feels cohesive and lends itself to your own desired style.

I want to think of this space as a continuation of our “California Casual” style. We utilized many darker tones in this space, starting with the rug and then in smaller furniture touches like the legs on our sectional and our full-length mirror. Since I didn’t want to go too far in the coastal direction, I only added nods to the style—pieces like an oversized driftwood style decoration or cane and rattan materials.

How to Achieve the Look

While this post is only to tease out our style for this space, I want to share pieces for those interested in this style or look. Mirrors are always a great addition to living rooms - especially when they are smaller like ours. We opted for a full-length mirror to reflect light near our front window. This gives the illusion that the room is much bigger than it is - which is a great decor trick! Another strong touch to add to your space to make a statement is Wallpaper. Utilizing a grasscloth or textured wallpaper will give you the costal inspiration which being too busy. I love the texture that this stone-colored grasscloth gives off!

For larger-scale pieces, look for symmetry or complementary styles. For example, our console table picks up a deep wood stain that is present throughout the space. You could also go for a statement piece and add a touch of cane or metal. Keeping things within this relaxed style helps everything flow without looking too pieces together. A round coffee table adds interest and prevents the space from appearing too boxy.

If you need additional seating look to low-profile accent chairs or bring in additional seating by using poufs. I love utilizing these as last-minute seating options because they are relatively small and work great in a pinch if you’re having company over!

Stay tuned for the reveal next week!

Cheers,

Kelly
